They came to be together again after a long hot summer. They came because they have found the joy of sharing the unifying power of God’s Word. And they came to eat manly food… and did they ever.
Thursday night was like old-time country “Dinner on the Grounds.” Men brought pulled pork from their smokers, huge pans of incredible home-made potato salad and baked beans that would win a blue ribbon. And then there was the Depression-Era peach cobbler like Grandma made, Oh baby, it was awesome.
Thursday night was the Annual BSF Band of Brothers Bar-B-Q Kickoff. This year’s study of Romans will begin in mid-September. Our In-Person Groups meet at FirstNLR on Tuesday mornings at 6am & Thursday nights at 6:30pm. Our Zoom Groups meet on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Men from different churches, backgrounds, age & race gather for one unifying purpose… to learn and discuss the transformational power of God’s Word.
We live in a busy time with many competing challenges to our time & commitments. At the Kickoff we recognized two men who gave us a legacy to persevere… to “Press On” even when life was difficult… but they came anyway. In their memory we announced the “Joe Richbourg – Marvin Kee Legacy Perseverance Award.” While they have gone home to be with Jesus, their spirit lives on. We also announced the first three recipients of this award.
The Band of Brothers Zoom offers a huge opportunity for men from all over the country to participate. We have family members, old friends, business associates, and even total strangers make the weekly meetings lively and challenging. One of the added bonuses for the Band of Brothers is for the men in our In-Person Groups who are ill, out of town or have a conflict, to attend our Zoom groups and not miss a beat. As a result, we had 15 men who received the Annual 100% Attendance Award.
Why did Joe & Mavin choose to push through their pain and attend? Why did 15 men find a way to attend all 30 sessions? The answer is they all fell in love with God’s Word. They found fellowship with like-minded men who are hungry to “Come near to God and He will come near to you.” They found something bigger & greater than what the world offers.
Our criteria for joining the Band of Brothers are simple. 1. Be a man. 2. A man who is sucking air. 3 A man who needs Jesus. BAM! That’s it!
