God School: Lost? Need Directions?

Growing up in rural Arkansas one pastime was driving the gravel country roads. These adventure trips usually started out around 9pm at Sammy’s Drive Inn with several guys in one car. After we got our cokes, we would take off in some general direction with no real purpose.

Interestingly country roads can all look alike, especially at night. The country road can be a lonely place to run out of gas, have a car problem, or hit a deer. This was the era of no cell phones or GPS, and no one knew where we were…usually many miles in the country where few people lived. But, hey, when you’re young and bullet-proof, what could go wrong?

After an hour or so we would usually come out to a blacktop road that went somewhere. Sometimes we were surprised when we discovered where we were. You know, this is a lot like how so many people go through life…just wandering down the back roads hoping they come out in a good place.

Joe, a dear friend of mine, sparked this idea the other day by giving me directions to his home. He lives in rural Grant County. Simply put, it’s so far back in the country he pipes in sunshine. To get there you will experience many choices of which road to take. Take the wrong road and you will never get to his house. Never!

Question, do you know where you want to go? Are you going in the direction you should be going? Knowing your directions (north, south, east, west) is significant. Recently Mary & I were traveling out of state. We spent the night in a town off the Interstate. The next morning, we asked the GPS lady for directions to get us to the Interstate. The GPS lady gave us convincing instructions, but in my gut, I knew the GPS lady was wrong. It was not taking us in the direction to connect with the Interstate. After too many minutes of argument, I turned to go in the direction of the Interstate. But not to argue we took her route. After 20 or 30 minutes of going through neighborhoods with no Interstate in sight I turned her off and went in the direction (due east), to the Interstate. BAM, there it was. This is a lesson I learned from driving the back roads as a lad… sense the direction you need to go.

Question, do you know the address? If you know the directions, do you know the address? Do you have specific instructions for how to get to the person’s home? Today there are many people, organizations and even religions that claim there are many ways to come to God. Note: God does not say there are other ways. In fact, the Bible is very clear. There is only one driveway to God’s House… that’s Jesus!

Jesus told us in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

There is more:

Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,”

John 10:9 “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.”

It makes no difference what anyone may think, write, or say, only the God of Creation has the authority to invite anyone to His Home. He gave us His Word, the Bible, which gives us specific instructions. This is an essential Truth. There is no other way. He promised us in Johns 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

So, if you are tired of driving around with a load of anxiety, fear, hopelessness, then change course and  follow God’s directions to His driveway. You will recognize His driveway by the “fruit of the Spirit (of) love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:22

Ponder this. Jesus told us His driveway will take us to, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” John 14:2

Where do you want to live out eternity? It’s your choice.
