God School: What Do You See?

In 2024 I had cataract surgery. Before surgery I thought I could see pretty well. The doctor asked me if I needed more light to drive and read? “Yes,” I replied, “because they don’t make the lights bright anymore.” In my mind I was doing simply fine, but I did the surgery anyway.

It was an incredible experience performed by a very gifted young man & his team. What blew me away was, “what I thought” I knew. There was a two-week period between the first eye and second eye surgery. This gave me a rare time in life to see “before” and “after” at the same time. I was amazed at what I was missing. Through one eye I saw a hazy and unclear world. The other sparkled with vibrant life and clarity.

Are you going through life “thinking” you see everything pretty-well? Maybe your self-talk goes something like, “Yes, life is getting worse. Everything has failed me.” So, you work harder, drink more, spend money you don’t have, do things to cover up but you know in your heart…“I’m missing something!”

Take heart, this happens to everyone. Everyone has cataracts of the heart. It’s called sin. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23. The smart ones “choose” to see their doctor.

It goes without saying, when the doctor is working “in” your eyes you don’t move. You sit still. It the same when Doctor Jesus says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10. It’s trusting His pierced hands to remove the cataracts from your heart. His desire for His Believers is that they see people and situations as He sees them. When the world sees differences, anger, hate, division and impossible, Followers of Christ will see “Every Soul Matters To God.” When people see storms, His Followers will see through the storm into His Glory & Hope. When the world sees helpless & hopeless, His Followers know they are loved & cherished by the King of Kings who Promised His Followers, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.’ John 10:28

There are many references in the Bible related to sight, but God pointed two very special Scriptures to me. When I was diagnosed with cancer in 1994, The Holy Spirit, (like the hands of a surgeon) directed me to Matthew 14:22-32. It was there I found Strength, Peace and even Joy through it all. Through it all I kept praying, “Don’t take your eyes off of Him.” He gave me the “No-Matter-What” ability to “Press On” (Philippians 3:12, 14).

There’s another verse that was born out of an impossible time in Scripture. It’s short, simple, and very clear. The nation of Judah was about to be over run and wiped out. King Jehoshaphat stood before the people and prayed, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12, Only God!

Through Bible Study Fellowship I have learned one of the amazing attributes of Jesus…He transforms everything. He would love to transform what you see…how you live life…your eternal destination.

There is no waiting room to see Jesus. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20.

How do you see things? What do you use to see life?
