These were the colors of the speedometer in my folks Oldsmobile Super 88. Oh my, it was a tank. I was an 18-year-old driver, in full control and bullet proof.
At 0 to 35 mph the speedometer had a green bar. It changed to yellow at 35 mph, then orange at 50 to 65 mph and then my favorite color, red. I convinced myself the car really drove much better when the speedometer bar was in the red…really red! What could go wrong?
Because nothing did go wrong it led to more bad choices…more close calls & stupid decisions. It was not until my mid 30’s that I recognized my chooser was broken. That was when I had “enough” of the pain & failure…that’s when I found Jesus was Enough…all that I really needed.
Life took a different direction…a new path in 1984. It’s a path I have been on for over 40 years. I call it “God’s Great Adventure.” Through the dips & turns of life, I know He is always with me (Joshua 1:9). When I took this path, He gave me a new chooser. His chooser requires calibration.
The next time you pump gas notice the sticker on the pump. That sticker certifies the pump was checked and calibrated against a standard measurement. Simply put, a gallon measurement is the same everywhere and never changes. This standard of right & wrong is found in the Bible. And here is the cool part, God tells us, “I the Lord do not change.” Malachi 3:6. God’s Word, the Supreme Authority has not & will not change.
I have discovered the best way to keep my “Chooser” calibrated is with daily Prayer & Bible Study, remain engaged with my Bible teaching church (FirstNLR – https://www.firstnlr.com/) and Bible Study Fellowship (https://www.bsfinternational.org/). When I am consistently calibrated my choices are much better.
One of my favorite Scripture/prayers that calibrates my focus is from Psalm 25:4-5, “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
Do I make dumb and bad choices? Yes. That is when I have shifted my focus from Him to me. That happens when I have drifted off and fallen out of calibration. But here is the Good News. He promises “Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.” Malachi 3:7
Maybe you have drifted off…gotten out of calibration. Know this, He loves you and wants to restore the relationship with you. No matter who you are or what you have done, He’s knocking on the door of your heart. He tells us, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20
Do you have a special calibration Scripture you could share? We would love to have it.
God Bless
