Law of the Farm: The Process of Corn On The Cob

Maybe you are like me. I love fresh corn on the cob. If you are lucky enough to get Esau Farms corn, you will be Blessed. It comes right out to the field in a huge sack. Ready for shucking & eating.

But the sack of corn didn’t just happen. Did you know, “corn takes roughly 80-110 days for most varieties” to develop? There are multiple stages from when the seed is planted, “3 days for germination, ~10 days for emergence, ~40-60 days for vegetative growth (V stages), ~60 days for pollination/silking (R1), and then about 30-60 days from silking (R1) to maturity (R6) for kernel fill, with the final dent (R5) to black layer (R6) taking about 2-3 weeks” Google

And get this, That pesky silk that hangs out the end of the corn, well that’s all part of God’s unique plan. “How it works:

  • One Silk, One Kernel: For every kernel, there is one silk strand, extending from the ear tip.
  • Pollen Delivery: Pollen from the corn tassel lands on the sticky silk, travels down the strand (like a pollen tube), and fertilizes the ovule (which becomes the kernel).

So, what you are sinking your teeth into is another of God’s miraculous processes. It’s the Law of The Farm. There are no microwave or short cuts in farming. It’s God’s Way & God’s Time. A process proven over thousands of years to work.

God didn’t have to start life down on His farm, but He did. I believe He chose the farm to teach and remind us; His Ways have endured through time. He spoke from His heart when He said, “Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!” Deuteronomy 5:29

Just like corn, our life is a process. I don’t have to understand everything to recognize God’s Hand…He is in control. Think about this. How does the seed know to send a root down first before sending the sprout up through the soil to the sun? This is just one of the many processes a corn plant will make in its short life.

But unlike all of God’s Creation, He gave man the ability to choose. The stars in the universe, the plants or the animals don’t sit around and debate what they should do, they obey. When God called the locust, frogs, gnats, and darkness in Exodus they obeyed perfectly and on His precise time.

But with man things are different. In Ephesians 2:3 “among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” Simply put, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) This is why we need a Savior. Our Savior, Jesus told us, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 only His way will work.

So, let’s go back to God’s Farm Process in Deuteronomy 5:29. First, he said, “Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me”. This is the seed germination stage. The heart digging down into His Word while lifting prayers up to His Son. The Second stage is, “keep all my commands always,” the growth development stage of “Following Him. And finally, the harvest stage, “so that it might go well with them and their children forever.” Listen to the words of Jesus, “that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 Yes, a Full Harvest.

There you have it, The Law of The Farm. We will harvest what we plant!

It’s a new year…a new crop. Isn’t it time You lived it His Way?

It begins with your heart. Will you allow Him to plant your heart in the Good Soil?

I love corn on the cob. My Dad always raised a field of corn for his animals and for us humans. I have gathered many ears straight from the field. However I never knew that each strain would pollinate and individual kernel of corn. Interesting.
