It was our first cup of coffee on a Saturday morning. Mary & I are sitting outside of our daughter’s home, grandson & grand dog sitting when I said, “We need a treat. I’m going up to the donut place.” A few minutes later I was there standing in line.

In front of me is a grandpa in his Saturday jeans & denim shirt and standing very close to him, his little 3-year-old granddaughter still dressed in her strawberry pj’s. As grandpa was finishing the order, which seemed to be a variety pack, the granddaughter looked up and then pointed at the donut holes. Immediately he said, “She will have a handful of those (donut holes).”

As I walked to the truck with our treats, I thought, “Ya know, that’s the way Our Father wants us to be…quietly standing close to Him, in our PJ’s. Just the two of us, sharing a special time with a special treat.

Life will come. The little granddaughter will become an adult and grandpa will pass. And when Life-Storms come, which they will, she will remember that moment standing so close to her grandpa. A moment when love had no bounds and she was totally safe & secure. A moment when the love of her grandpa, who knew her heart so well that she didn’t have to say a word when he said, “And she will have a handful of those.”

I believe God gives us moments & memories to better understand Him…to know & love Him. He desires us to have the heart & attitude of the little granddaughter…standing close to Him. It went without saying, “He shielded him (her) and cared for him (her); he guarded him (her) as the apple of his eye.” Deuteronomy 32:10

Maybe you have been fortunate to have such a grandpa but have drifted away. Or maybe you never knew the No-Matter-What love of a grandpa BUT know this…Your Heavenly Father loves you so much He sent His One and Only Son to live and die so that you, no matter where you are or what you have done, could stand right next to Him forever!
