In the 1960’s this was my kind of literature. It had the right number of pictures, words, and sarcasm. The Salt Lake Weekly said it this way, “Back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, Mad comic books emerged as one of America’s most popular pulp periodicals. Targeting mostly the young, they provided a new kind of reading—a satirical breath of provocative reason, gingerly and flippantly talking about the issues of the times with a humorous, yet insightful home-grown wisdom.”
It was a time when we were getting under our desks for nuclear bomb drills in school…the nighty Vietnam War news reporting the days death count of Viet Cong and U.S. soldiers, and draft notices being delivered to your mailbox. Driving fast and being bullet proof. The overarching message was, “What, Me Worry?” Google defines it this way, “it means “I’m not worried” and usually associated with an obviously dangerous situation. The suggestion is that the person is too stupid or oblivious to understand the danger.” Ouch, but that was how many of us thought. We did & said stupid things to cover our emptiness…a fear of the unknown.
What my Sunday School teachers and my mother taught me sounded good except it did not agree with my self-centered “do it my way” strategy for life. God’s way then appeared too harsh. I would write my own rules for good & bad.
Today we see this same type of “What, Me Worry” attitudes. We cover over our insecure & anxious feelings with work, sports, sex, booze…anything with the volume turned up so we don’t hear His whisper… “Be still, and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10
When we get still and ponder the last 10 years, we recognize something is going on…something is going to happen. And it is! Jesus is coming! It started thousands of years ago with examples & prophecies in the Old & New Testaments…God’s Day of Judgment…His Wrath is certain!
This year we have been studying Revelation in Bible Study Fellowship. Yes, there are many mysteries & unknowns but there is a clear message, the day of Judgment is coming with the return of Jesus. In Revelation 14:15-16 “Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him (Son of Man) who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” So, he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.” This points directly back to the “Parable of the Wheat & Weeds” in Matthew 13:39-43 “The harvest is the end of the world, and the harvesters are the angels. “Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send His angels, and they will remove from His Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous (right relationship with God) will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
I now understand I don’t get to determine good & bad…only Creator God has that authority. Revelation 22:7 “Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book (the Bible). With the Trust & Confidence of His Word I Believe Him (Jesus) when He said, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:28.
If you are at that point in your life and desire the “peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” Philippians 4:7 to be counted as one of His…to spend eternity with Him, it begins with, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10
Ponder this promise of Jesus. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
“Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” Revelation 22:20
Amen & amen!
