Lizzie knows to go to her food bowl at meal time. But like all of our dachshunds she places herself at my chair during mealtime because she knows I don’t always get the food from my plate to my mouth. Our dogs, like every dog I have known does not discriminate or think about where the food came from or if it is safe…only that it smells and taste good.
We are much like this with what we read, watch and listen to. Lizzie would eat dog treats all day long if she had a choice. For some of us we could sit and watch classic movies, others it would be sports or Facebook or any number of mental “treats”. Treats are not designed for the main course…for substance. Determining what is best for our health we go to trusted sources. This is significant. Several years ago, before Lizzie, our 17 year old Molly (dachshund) was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Getting her the right food added 3 or 4 years to her life. Our vet cautioned us if she were to eat what we were eating at Thanksgiving, she would probably die.
So, where do you go to feed your spirit? I go to the Source & The Authority of all Truth, God’s Word. Proverbs 30:5, ““Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” Psalm 19:7, “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”
Man’s opinion, written or spoken, is much like the passage from Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of our God endures forever.” Only the Bible has endured the test of time and accuracy.
If you are feeling ill from what the world has been feeding you, it’s time to change your diet. Start a daily, first thing in the morning habit of reading His Word for 20 minutes. Start with a Psalm a day. Then add a passage from John. Just read & ponder as if it were a letter from a dear loved one…because you know what, it is. It’s a love letter from our Heavenly Father. He desires for you to come closer because in His love letter He tells us we are the “apple of his eye”. (Deuteronomy 32:10)
Lizzie is lucky to have such good parents to care for her.
