I will always remember “Mail Call” during my Air Force training days. In Basic Training the Drill Instructors would assemble everyone into a group. He would take each envelope, slowly read it, and call out the person’s name. Sometimes he would take extra pleasure in telling everyone who the mail was from or smell the envelope and make a comment.
I remember sitting on the floor waiting & wanting for my name to be called. The first thing a person does when they get their mail is to look at the return address to see who it is from. This determines where & when you open and read the letter. If it’s from family & friends it will be ok to share, but if it’s from a “special person,” that’s to be read in private. You never know when you just might get a “Dear John” letter.
One thing I noticed was I always read them again and sometimes again & again. As I read the letter, I could almost hear the person’s voice speak…telling me the updated story. Here was tangible proof that someone loved me…that I was not alone.
There was nothing better than to hear the sergeant scream, “Mail Call!”
You know, our Heavenly Father has sent us His Love Letter. It’s called the Bible. In it contains everything we need to know about who He is, how much He loves us and how we can come and live with Him forever. Like the letters from home, I never got tired of reading His Word. It touches my heart to say, “I Love You so much!” It is my proof that I am loved and I am not alone.
And get this…you can open your mail anywhere without fear of receiving a “Dear John”! No matter what you have done, where you have been, if you can suck air, you can accept Jesus as your Lord & Savior. The proof is found in Luke 23. Three men dying on their crosses. Two were criminals the other was Jesus who was innocent. The exchange starts in verse 40, “But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus loved both men. Only one chose Jesus. Only the one lives with Jesus today.
Maybe this is you. You feel like you never get any “Love Letters.” Maybe you feel alone, tired and discouraged in your boot-camp-life-experience. Good News! The One (Jesus) is calling your name. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20
