What do you do to build strength? Some go to the gym. But for the gym, or any physical activity to work, it requires discipline, consistency & commitment. There is another type of strength that requires discipline, consistency & commitment. It’s the strength found only in Jesus.
His (Jesus) strength is developed with a daily habit of drawing near to Him through prayer, Bible study, regular church attendance and serving others with our time & financial support.
There is a difference in physical strength & spiritual strength. Physical strength comes from what we can do, while spiritual strength comes from what He can do. As we draw closer to Him, we discover our strength grows as we depend on Him. We also discover that the strength & power of this world is only temporary & fleeting. God’s Power & Strength is forever and is supreme. God’s Power & Strength is conditional. It’s for His children and it must be in accordance with His plan…His Will (Matthew 26:39). We are told all can receive His Power, Strength, Wisdom, & Peace, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
Paul described his process as this. “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it (thorn in the flesh) away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10
David understood God’s power & strength. He was hunted by King Saul and yet gave us this wisdom in Psalm 18:32, “It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.” Then we find “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14
It was this same young teenage shepherd who proclaimed with total confidence when he charged toward the giant with only a sling and 5 rocks, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” 1 Samuel 17:45
Romans 8:38-39 captures the confidence we can have when we trust Him, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This is the certainty God was telling Joshua, and us, in Joshua 1:9. He said, “for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
