My dear friend who writes weekly “life Application Messages” wrote Monday about a lost delivery driver in Woodville, Mississippi. Seems the driver had followed the instructions from his phone to find a business in the town of 1,000 people. We exchanged texts back & forth about how the “lil” person in our phone can take us down a path that we don’t want to go. But smugly I thought, “Not me!”
The next morning, Tuesday 7.29.25, we are leaving Joplin, Missouri for Kansas City. Normally Mary & I pray, and I will look on an electronic map to get my bearings and a visual for a trip, but not this morning! Mary gets in the car and says, “I have us all set up to go”! She said, “Go up to the street and turn left.” It didn’t seem right, but I did it anyway. We drove several blocks, and she said, turn left at the light. I bucked & snorted as Mary said, “Well, this is what it’s telling me.” Mary & I have different gifts. I normally have a good sense of direction wherever I am. For Mary, no matter which way she faces, that’s her north.
Later, I wheeled into a parking lot, pulled out my phone and looked at the map. I recognized the problem. The “lil” person in the phone was going to take us on a scenic trip through small town Missouri to Kansas City, not on the Interstate. I thought I had it corrected but it kept taking me back way to the scenic route. In my gut I knew it was wrong, but I was where I had never been. I knew the Interstate was east & north of us and the popular phone app had us going north & west. Then I saw a sign for a town I recognized from the digital map. BAM, “I’m going to go in the direction that will get us there.” And it did, 30 minutes later.
I’ve been a Follower of Christ for 42 years. I fell in love with His “Guidebook For Living” in a Bible Study Fellowship study of John in 1985. Since then, I have found God’s Word to be fresh, new, and real to my life. No matter the situation, God has a written Way. But like the “lil” person in the phone who will also guide you, there are many popular guide sources found in churches, books, internet & TV today. The problem is how do you know if it is taking you in the “Right Way”?
There is only ONE (1) Way. God’s Word. This should be the Believers default response when we find ourselves in uncertain locations, “What does Scripture say?” Romans 4:3, not what did someone else say or write. We know, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16 And we know, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4
God’s Word is the Supreme Authority for life’s journey. This fall, Bible Study Fellowship will start a new study, People of The Promise Land, Exile To Return. It’s an Old Testament study of God’s people that went their own foolish way and found themselves lost and imprisoned in Babylon. But God is always in control. He is The Way Maker, the God of Redemption. He Promised and Delivered that His people would return to the Promise Land. Just as He delivered His people, He can bring you back from whatever holds you…He is Almighty God.
