“Who, Me?”

It was mysteriously quiet yesterday when Mary said, “Where is Lizzy?” I got up to go check. When I opened the door to Mary’s office/yarn room, Lizzy came running out. What she left behind was yarn strewn around the room. It was a tangled mess. I quietly shut the door trying to untangle the mess. After Mary got over the shock, and Lizzy was put in her kennel, Mary methodically began to untangle and salvage as much of the yarn as she could. Note, Mary usually buys specific yarn for a design project. It is not like going back to Home Depot and getting another 2 X 4 board. Also, if you are not a knitter, you are unaware that some yarn will cost $39.00 or more a skein. As much as she wanted to find another home for Lizzy and throw the yarn mess away, she couldn’t.

We, you & I, are like Lizzy. We do things without thinking. We get into things that do not belong to us. We do stupid things. And when we get caught, we go “pitiful.” We respond, “Who, Me? I’m good and sweet.” We tuck our tails in and go to our secret hiding place.

In Exodus 32 God’s people chose their own way, their own wants, and their own needs when they asked Aaron to make a golden calf idol. When God sent Moses down from Mt. Sinai, Moses saw a mess. The people were having a drunken orgy worshipping a man-made golden calf. God and Moses got incredibly angry. “The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked (stubborn, rebellious) people. Now therefore, let Me alone and do not interfere, so that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them.” Exodus 32:9 But Moses, as angry & hurt as God, interceded & advocated for the people. Moses appealed to God’s Glory, His reputation…His Promises. Moses prayed, “Turn away from Your burning anger and change Your mind about harming Your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Jacob), Your servants to whom You swore [an oath] by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

Get ready. The people deserved to die. But God listened to Moses. “So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He had said He would do to His people.” Exodus 32:14 This Old Testament story points us to Jesus. It is Jesus who intercedes for us. We deserve to die for our sins just like the Israelites (Romans 6:23). “But because Jesus lives forever, His priesthood lasts forever. Therefore, He is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through Him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.”

Are you tired of your mess? He will intercede for you…if you ask Him. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
