“I Can’t Carry All Of That!”

I was a young college boy the day I learned about perspective. I had run out of gas and walked about a mile to the gas station. When I asked the station manager if I could borrow a gas can, he replied, “All I have is a 5 gallon can.” I immediately thought about caring the 30 pounds of gas for a mile. I said, “I don’t need that much.” That’s when the old man replied to the young college boy, “Son, you don’t have to fill it up.” BAM!

Over the years I experience the joy of inviting men to Bible Study Fellowship. My purpose is not to develop Bible scholars but for men who fall in love with His Word. One common response is, “I’m so busy now. Maybe later.” In other words, “I can’t carry the full 5 gallon can.” Good news, God doesn’t expect you to memorize the whole Bible. It’s His Love Letter He gave us so that we may know His heart… to draw close to Him. He gave us His Word that we might know how to live “life to the full” (John 10:10) God’s Word is “The Guidebook For Living.”

In 1985, 9-months after making Jesus the Lord of my Life, I walked into a Bible Study Fellowship class not knowing much about the Bible. God revealed Himself though the study of John. I discovered the heart of Jesus that year. Each subsequent study has revealed more of God’s Love. Each year I look forward to that moment when men, with a misty twinkle in his eyes, say, “I’ve never read the Bible like this before.” That book they have carried around for years has now become the “Living Word of God” (1 Peter 1:23). That’s when the Bible becomes a personal love letter to be read & reread… even underlined.

I’m a simple guy. I begin each new study just as I did at the gas station years ago. I tell the man, “Just put a gallon in the can. That will be enough to get me back here to fill up.” I search for one thing; one truth I can use each time I open my Bible. Ponder this one verse today. “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11

Here is one of my daily prayers I found years ago, hidden in His Word. “Show me Your ways, Lord, teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long.” Psalm 25:4,5
