We all start the same way, somebody spoon feeding us. It starts with a plan or strategy of selecting what “lil” Johnny needed, what he would eat, creative ways and time for the “event” and the clean up afterwards. For Mary & me, the sooner our children learned to use their own spoon, the better. It might have been a bit messier and a little longer, but it was necessary for our children to learn.
In 1984 I came to the Lord. The following year I fell in love with God’s Word. In September of 1985 I enrolled in something that would shape my life and my relationship with God. It was BSF (Bible Study Fellowship). Before BSF, I thought of the Bible as a boring book with do’s & don’t, no pictures, hard to understand and the only people who knew what the Bible said were preachers & PhD’s. I discovered from my study of John that year, that the Bible truly is the Living Word of God.
BSF was founded by Audrey Wetherell Johnson, a British evangelist to China. When a group of ladies asked Ms. Johnson if she would lead them in a Bible Study, after prayer and consideration she responded, “Yes, on one condition, I will not spoon feed you.”
Since 1959 the Holy Spirit led Ms. Johnson and the BSF International organization in a unique and life-changing ministry. “BSF is an international Christian interdenominational or parachurch fellowship of lay people offering a system of structured Bible study.” Google.
When I first began studying God’s Word, I was like the young fellow in Picture 1. I enjoyed someone reading and telling me what the Bible said. That was great but it seldom would sink deep into my heart. I didn’t get the application.
In Picture 2, the young fellow is like many people in church who have grown dependent on being “spoon fed” each week. If you notice he is in his chair but only going through the motions.
The young man in Picture 3, has learned the Pure Joy of savoring every morsel. He has learned to use his spoon to get it all. When we take our own spoon and apply it to Proverbs 2:3 for how we study God’s Word, He will whisper to your heart. “indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”
Yes, the process might be a little messy and it will take time but the rewards…the Joy of His Presence, cannot be measured. Let this Promise of God settle into your heart. “’Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’”
The Bible is God’s Love Letter to us. He will Bless you…if you pick up your spoon.
