When I was stationed in Turkey, I wrote home and said, “When I get home, I want a catfish, turnip/mustard greens, corn bread, and your fabulous German Chocolate Cake.” The military chow hall never had fried catfish; the greens were terrible, as was what they called corn bread and the chocolate cake…well, it was a utility chocolate cake. Mom was a scratch cook. She baked a multi-layer, gooey, ecstasy of German Chocolate Cake that always brought top dollar at our school cake raffles. It wasn’t that I didn’t eat while I was in Turkey, but the closer I got to going home, the more I thought about seeing my folks and eating these heavenly foods along with a platter of fried chicken. This was what I was hungry for.
Hungry is what you think about. You visualize & set expectations and you find a way to satisfy your hunger. Whatever it is, good or bad, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7. Earl Nightengale powerfully said it this way, “You become what you think about.” The cold hard truth is, we are where we are because of what we have been thinking about. The question is, do you have peace & confidence? Peace & confidence, what does that have to do with being hungry or thinking? Everything!
It all starts with asking yourself what am I hungry for? Am I hungry for the temporary things of this world? When we hunger for stuff, this world will leave us anxious, doing stupid things and in the end, the stuff will all disappear (Rev 21:1).
Jesus offers us an incredible choice. Ponder His words. Ask yourself, can the world match this offer?
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe anything the world has to offer. Only Jesus has the authority & power to keep His Promises. Jesus changes the focus from the temporary conditions of this world to eternity in John 14:2, “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” Think about it…home with Jesus…forever!
Nicodemus recognized he too was tired of the chow hall food of the world. Jesus saw his hungry heart and replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” John 3:3. We learn in Romans 10 what “Born Again” means and how to change our eternal destination. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9.
This world is like eating in the chow hall, but one day I’m going home to dine with my Father, Jesus & the Holy Spirit…forever.
It all begins with a hungry heart… “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Mattew 5:6
Wonder if we will ever have fried catfish or juicy steak in heaven? Since there is no death there, I guess we will all be vegetarians. I am sure we will not gripe because it will be heavenly food.
Guess this just gives us a good excuse to chow down on these favorites while we are still on earth!
