What’s The Plumb Bob In Your Life?

What is a “Plumb Bob”? I found this interesting information on Google; The “plumb bob became a symbolic measure of truth, because it never lies.” It’s an ancient tool going back to the Egyptian & Babylonian ages. It’s “A string tied to a free-hanging weight is always perpendicular to the ground, regardless of who is holding it and how.” Plumb bobs were used to build cathedrals, castles and bridges…and skyscrapers.” Plumb bobs are used to insure that “elevator shafts must be straight and smooth.”

Opinions and phrases like, “I think it looks pretty good” or “this is what I believe” are not acceptable for bridges and buildings that could collapse. And yet people who go through life, eyeballing decisions, saying “I believe this is right,” later have their world collapse around them. It’s the default way of the world, based on opinion, on the appearance of what “looks good.”

So, what is the “plumb bob” for how to live? We have a choice. There is the world’s way of opinions, current culture fads, popular authors & celebrities with opinions presenting what feels good, or there is God’s Way. God tells us, “For my (God’s) thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

Ok but how do I discover God’s Way? Simple, it’s in His Word, the Bible. Both the ancient plumb bob & the Bible are as true today as they were then. The creator of gravity is the same author of the Bible. He has not authorized changes to gravity or His Word. They are unchangeable. No matter what someone writes or says, it is simply their opinion. Only God’s Word is the final authority.

“For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” Romans 15:4

In today’s world we are bombarded with so much information…opinions that cause good people to be distracted and hopeless. This is the tried-and-true strategy from Genesis 3:1. Listen to the slick way it was first used. “Now the serpent (Satan) was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Then in Genesis 3:6 we see what happens next. “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable…” Bam! Adam & Eve did what so many have done all through the ages…depending on opinions more that God’s Word. This story also points out an important fact, each person is responsible for studying & knowing God’s Word personally. No One Can Do It For You!

If you are anxious…feeling hopeless, you have a choice. Continue listening to the world’s way or give God 15-20 minutes every day, prayerfully studying His Word. Start with an attitude of expecting to find the treasure, “As for God, His way is perfect: The Lord’s Word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in Him.” Psalm 18:30

Isn’t it time you found the Truth for your life?
