I love this phrase. Several years ago, I invited a good friend to speak at a leadership conference because she is an upbeat…find-a-way-leader. During her presentation on leading & supervising, she paused and said very firmly, “You need to get your pom-poms out!” Bam! She was speaking of the ever-increasing dissatisfaction employees have with their boss. The statistics are staggering. I remember one of my former bosses saying, “Why should I congratulate you for doing your job?!” Even my ‘lil Lizzy (dachshund) likes to hear, “Good job Lizzy. Good job.”
Today is one of the greatest opportunities for Believers to make a difference. I remember this phrase drilled into us in grade school, “Stop, Look & Listen.” Wherever you are, store, church, work, home or like yesterday when a friend called. It can be as simple as telling someone, “Thank you for your smile.” “Good to see you today.” “Thank you for your service.” “May you have a great day.” Or deeper with, “I know you can make it.” And then there are those special occasions, when God whispers to you a scripture to share and you then ask, “May I pray for you?”
Paul repeatedly instructs us in:
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
- 1 Thessalonians 5:14, “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.”
- Colossians 2:2-3 “My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Did you catch the “why”? We are called to encourage the people God brings onto our path, “that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” We must take our eyes off our current situation and place them on Him, the only Hope.
Today, you can make a difference. Today, is the day to “Get Your Pom-Poms Out!” for the Lord!
Such good advice and so needed in the world today. Everywhere we look there is problems, disasters, crime, corruption & evil. Christians should be God’s cheerleaders and looking for opportunities to offer encouragement and hope to this troubled world.
Way to go Robert! You are doing a great job with these!
