The Farm: The Essential Role of Water.

Plants are about 80-95% water and need water for multiple reasons.” Carleton College

Water provides:

  • “A common trigger for seed germination.
  • Transport nutrients from the soil into and throughout the plant.
  • Photosynthesis, how plants make their own food.
  • Structure, plant cells expand, which contributes to the plant’s form and function, including helping the plant stand up straight.
  • Temperature regulation, it (water) cools plants by evaporating from the leaves. This process is called transpiration, and it also helps keep plants from overheating.
  • Growth, Nutrients and sugars from photosynthesis are dissolved in water and move from areas of high concentration, like the roots, to areas of lower concentration, such as the blooms, stem, and leaves, for growth and reproduction.“ Google

But let’s go back to how it all started. “Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,” Genesis 2:5. God provided not only the water but how it would be delivered. The early farmers had no doubt about who controlled this essential part of life, God.

When I was in Israel, several years ago, we visited a recreation of a First Century Hebrew village. One of the memories was the farmer, having prepared & planted his field, would kneel, and pray to God for rain. “He (God) will also send you rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the land will be rich and plentiful. In that day your cattle will graze in broad meadows.” Isaiah 30:23

“Water is indeed essential for all life (plant & animal) on, in, and above the Earth. This is important to you because you are made up mostly of water.” Water Science School. “Most of the human body is water, with an average of roughly 60%.” Medical News Today. Water provides many of the same functions in humans as in plants.

God uses water to transform hopeless & impossible into Life & Hope. In the desert God revealed His Power & Authority to provide water to His 2 million thirsty Israelites, “The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” Exodus 17:5,6. Another fascinating illustration is in John 4, where Jesus sat waiting for the Samaritan woman at the well. In her conversation with Jesus, she recognized she had a Spiritual thirst that only Jesus could satisfy. “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

Are you thirsty? Are you tired of trying to quench your thirst with imitation-water of the world? Like the woman at the well, there is only One True Water, Jesus. The woman came to the well as an outcast of no value…she left with the Living Water of Jesus that brought life & value to her heart. And how? …She simply said, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty…”
