Growing up on Andy’s Farm in the late 1950’s and early 60’s was very different than farming today. The primary weed & grass control method of that time was cultivation. This method was to drive a tractor pulling a cultivator between the rows digging up the grass & weeds. Cultivating soybeans is like threading a needle…you have to pay attention to what you are doing. If you don’t…you will plow up 4 rows of soybeans ($$$).
Our tractors were air conditioned; we got all the air that was blowing that day. The year we got umbrellas for the tractors was like Christmas in July. We thought we had it made. With the intense heat of the day, hot air blowing in your face and the groaning hum of the tractor was sometimes more than I could take after lunch. I remember my first experience…I had been doing so good until…I woke up and looked back at the beans I had plowed up. I stopped the tractor and jumped down, talking to the beans, “Please don’t die” as I poked the plowed beans back in the ground. I propped the bean plants up and poured some of my drinking water on the beans hoping this would work. One of the unique things about farming is that, it has its own built-in accountability system of sowing & reaping. When my dad drove his combine down that field he could tell where I had gone to sleep…there was no harvest.
We as Believers sometimes find ourselves just going through the motions, even falling asleep at our job. We don’t pay attention to the opportunities to share the “Good News” with a person…a person God has brought onto our field. Ponder this, “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.” Revelation 3:1
It’s time to wake up…splash cold water in our face and spread the news. It’s time to go into the fields of our lives proclaiming, “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.” Acts 14:15
